About The Event
The mental health and well-being of young adults ages 18 to 24 is in crisis, and the data reflect it. Suicide rates in this age group have surged in recent years, with a 63% increase among those ages 20 to 24 between 2001 and 2021 (Curtin & Garnett, 2023). Rates are even higher in rural communities (CDC, 2020). Within college athletics, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death, and the number of student-athlete suicides has doubled over the last decade (Whelan et al., 2024).
Athletic trainers and mental health professionals are on the front lines of this issue. Your role in athlete care extends far beyond physical recovery. You are uniquely positioned to recognize risk, foster connection, and be a bridge to life-saving support.
This essential-level training is designed specifically for professionals working in athletics.
You’ll gain practical skills to:
Identify suicide risk and protective factors in student-athletes
Recognize warning signs and respond with confidence and care
Initiate and navigate open conversations about mental health and suicide
Strengthen your MHEAP (Mental Health Emergency Action Plan) with evidence-based strategies
This course goes beyond awareness. It’s about action. This program will equip you with the tools to proactively support athlete mental health, reduce stigma, and build a culture of safety and openness within your program and athletics.
